Agnieszka Kozłowska explored the geology of Puez-Geisler mountains using a unique photographic technique she has developed. To represent the geological variety of the area, she collected samples of different types of rocks, crushed them to powder and used them as pigments. The material was mixed with a light-sensitive substance, coated onto paper and exposed in a self-constructed large format camera to produce an image, without any need for printing or post-production. Each of the resulting photographic objects is a particularly time- and labour-intensive experiment – it requires several hours of exposure in very strong sunlight, and the outcome remains largely beyond the artist’s control. As site-specific pulverised rock pigment is used to photograph the site of its origin, substrate and subject of photographic representation become one – each photograph is not only ›of‹ but also ›out of‹ the represented place.
